What is a Values-First Approach to Conscious Work?

A Better PR Model

The PR industry model is completely broken. It’s structured to benefit the employer—not the employee.

Employees work unreasonable hours and are on up to 15 accounts. They serve the client because they pay a retainer, which means teams are beholden to their demands—to include being screamed at and insulted, told to do additional work and expected to do it immediately. The employees that manage to succeed despite this environment are never financially rewarded. All the money stays at the top!

The work is anemic, siloed and measured from a lens of profitability—not substance. If employees are good at media relations, they only do media relations. If they know health care, they just do health care work. For some PR firms, employees are billable hours, so either they are in meetings all day or they are one of many “warm bodies” that bill. At other PR firms, the only measure of success is monthly media coverage, which means pitching all day—whether there is news or not.

This is the reason there is much turnover in PR.

CEOs at PR firms are almost exclusively focused on making money, which means they chase any and all new business and agree to work with almost any company that will pay them.

No one really cares about the individual. A boss’ priority is themselves- getting the approval of the CEO, participating in big pitch meetings and being chosen to lead big accounts. Mentorship is a box checking exercise, and while someone may ask an employee what their bigger goals are, how could the PR firm structure described above ever support someone’s dreams and interests?

Takeaway: If you want to grow, you have to leave.

This isn’t one or two PR firms. This is 99% of the PR firms out there.

This is not who we are. Ditto is different. It’s the difference between us and them that makes us special.

Why Ditto

Ditto strives to go beyond being a great PR firm. Ditto’s goal is to become one of the best start-ups to hire and work for. Period.

We are on that trajectory because we made a conscious choice to put employees' happiness over everything else. From the benefits to the work to employee wellness and professional development- Ditto has put as much care, resources, and consideration as possible into every aspect of its employees’ personal and professional well-being.

The efforts have been reciprocated.

Ditto employees put an amazing amount of love, care, thought and attention into their work. For themselves? Yes, but also for their teammates and the company.

As a result, Ditto is on the verge of something amazing. From attracting the best talent to the caliber of companies that want to hire us, Ditto’s reputation is growing quickly with zero promotion!

Why does this matter?

Employees are an important part of something special. Together, we become more.
